The (Hidden) Campus Ministry Opportunity Next Door

As congregations across our great state begin planning for the Fall, Summer offers the perfect moment to take a fresh look at campus ministry. Many people picture campus ministry happening only at four-year universities. In reality, opportunities extend far beyond those settings. Any place where students pursue higher education such as community colleges, junior colleges, and CareerTech campuses, are also opportunities for campus ministry ripe for gospel outreach.

More Campuses Than You Think

The Oklahoma District currently has three official LCMS campus ministries:

  • Trinity, Norman serving the University of Oklahoma
  • Zion, Stillwater serving Oklahoma State University
  • Grace, Tulsa serving the University of Tulsa

These ministries are vital, but they represent only a fraction of the mission field available. Oklahoma’s higher-education includes:

  • The Oklahoma CareerTech system boasting 29 technology center districts operating on 62 campuses across the state.
  • The Oklahoma State System of Higher Education which has 25 public colleges and universities, made up of 16 public universities and 12 two-year colleges, many with multiple locations.

Every one of these campuses gathers students who are navigating major life decisions, forming identity, seeking community, and in need of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Each one represents an open door for congregations to bring Christ’s Word and care to young adults.

Simple, Effective Ways Congregations Can Begin

While every campus has its own culture, several outreach practices are universal across contexts:

  • Weekly meals that offer students a warm, no-cost place to gather
  • School-supply support, such as providing scrubs for nursing students or tools for technical programs
  • Mentorship or internship connections when members work in fields students are studying
  • Social events that create low-pressure opportunities to meet Christian peers and find community
  • A midweek Bible study held on or near campus, God’s word does not return empty

These efforts do not require a large staff or a major budget. They begin with a congregation noticing the students already in their community and choosing one simple step to welcome them.

Why This Matters Now

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, as of early 2025, 40% of U.S. adults aged 25 and older hold at least a bachelor’s degree. The U.S. Labor Department reports that nearly 17% of working adults hold a postsecondary vocational certification or license. The numbers go up as younger cohorts are looked at. These numbers reflect a growing population of young adults who spend significant time on campuses—places where the Church can meet them with Christ’s love, guidance, and truth.

Campus ministry is not limited to large universities. It is a mission field woven into nearly every community in Oklahoma. It is often thought that the more education a person attains the less likely they are to be religious. But actual studies show the opposite, as demonstrated by demographer Ryan Burge.

And while younger generations are less religious overall, the sections that are religious are more religious than previous generations. Which means our young people that are Christian are thirsty for church.

The Opportunity Ahead

Your congregation may be closer to a campus than it realizes. Whether it’s a CareerTech center, a two-year college, or a regional university, students are learning, working, and living right next door. Congregations can play a meaningful role in their lives by offering presence, hospitality, and most importantly the hope of the Gospel.

I want to encourage your congregation to explore the campus nearest you, consider how your gifts might align with student needs, and take the first step toward building a ministry connection. The opportunities are abundant and the harvest is ready.

In Christ,
